Diary, 1849 Apr.-July.

Diary kept by Gould on his passage from Boston, Mass. to San Francisco, Calif. on the 320-ton bark "Maria", captained by J.P. Baker (Apr.-July 3, 1849). Begun after rounding the Horn, the diary summarizes the earlier events of the voyage. Entries describe life aboard ship, fellow passengers, and ships sited. Illustrated with 13 watercolor sketches by Gould of the "Maria" and other ships seen on the trip and a map showing the route taken. Includes crew and passenger list.
